Nassau In The Bahamas, 1950s
Filed under: Blog Entries, Business, Society & Culture, Think Global, Twitter
Here’s a film recommended to me by @Jchasemusic on Twitter. It shows a tour of Nassau and the island of New Providence in the Bahamas in the 1950s. Not having been alive during that time, I though the commentator was very interesting in his description of the island. I’m not sure if it would have made me want to pack my backs and go on a vacation, but I’m not sure I would have been too welcome anyways. The footage was found on the Travel Film Archive’s Youtube channel.

Hey thanks for the informative video of the Bahamas. i didnt realize there was such a drastic change in its appearance.
Ruth, I thought it was interesting also. Things have truly changed since then. Thanks for visiting the site.
We used to see dolphins, before they were all captured by the encounter places. The fishing sloops along Woodes Rogers must have been a sight to behold – now the Haitian sloops (never as graceful but still intriguing & authentic) aren’t allowed in the harbour any more. Imagine playing polo by the harbour, and the soldier on detail atop the fort – what the heck! what kind of uniform is that? The smell in the sponge processing yard must have been phenomenal! How did the diving guys spot & retrieve those quarters so quickly? Fun video – thanks!
I am a Bahamian born in 1973 and the Bahamas changed dramatically by then from what you saw in this video. We have beautiful sun sea and sand.
It is a wonderful place to vacation and live.
I invite you to visit and enjoy with us.
