Blog Interview with Here Come the Newlyweds Season 1 Winners – Johnnie & Crystal Moutra

In the world of blogging, you never know how people will react to something you post. Blogging has allowed me to meet a lot of great people and this is no exception. When the Johnnie & Crystal Moutra won the show, I have to admit I was pretty happy for them. Not only did they look like a good couple, the played the game the way it should have been played and earned the respect of everyone on the show. Even better, they were from my hometown, Missouri City, TX (the place where dreams come true), so you know I had to show them some love. Well, the post got picked up by some other sites and became pretty popular. Fans of the Moutras from all over the world left comments, one being from Johnnie’s mom. I contacted her and she put me in contact with Johnnie (thanks Momma Moutra).

I want to thank Johnnie and Crystal for taking the time to answer the questions. I’m hoping this won’t be the last you all get to hear from them on this blog. Also thanks to the folks at ABC for getting us set up. Season 2 of Here Come the Newlyweds will air Mondays on ABC at 9pm Central. I just watched the second episode last night and like season 1 will make for a night of good TV.

When my wife and I got married, everyone called us honeymooners for at least the first five years. How has life changed since the finale of “Here Come the Newlyweds? What have you all been up to?

We purchased our own home on the eve of Christmas. Lol, we moved out my mamas house, and moved not even 2 minutes down the street from my mamas. Other than that, we’re still working at the school (My parents own a private school, Bearrington School in Stafford Tx)……Crystal’s a great teacher (Pre-K 3)…….the children in her class are already reading! and speaking their numbers en espanol. I (John-John) am still the same ol’ silly, handsome, joke tellin’ self….I’ll never change.

According to the ABC website, the show was “all about relationships, the differences between men and women, and the universal issues that every couple must face”. Crystal, what did you learn about Johnnie during the show? Johnnie, same question.

Crystal – That he still didn’t know me! Before the show I used to ask him all the to go shopping for clothes with me…..now we’re on national TV and he gets all the sizes wrong.
Johnnie – Women take too long… I could drop Crystal off at the mall in Houston, drive to Galveston, use the restroom for about 30 – 45 minutes ( #2), drive back, get gas, go back to the mall, and she’d still be trying on clothes…..I’m starting to wonder if she knows her own sizes.

During the final episode of the show, what was going through your mind before hearing the results?

Johnnie – When the Holmes picked us to join them, from then on I couldn’t sleep at all. So much goes through your mind when so much is at stake….especially since we turned down $15,000. Then on top of that, the couples that were voted off came back….mad…you start to wonder what was said, or done….why some of the couples felt I was the
reason they were voted off.

Word on the internet is you all have a newborn. How’s parenthood?

We have a very handsome, hilarious son named Landon Vance Moutra. His first birthday is April 10th. He’s well known as our TV baby…( We were left in the room by ourselves on the show with nothing to do)…It’s a good thing though that he already has some experience under his belt. Listening in on the show with “Newlyweds,” and when Crystal was delivering the baby, I (John John) was doing a live interview on the news (ABC 13). We love being parents. Since day 1,
he’s been such a happy baby. He’s always lifting us, and everyone around us spirits up.

When I posted on my blog post about you all winning, the post got picked up pretty quickly. Are you all amazed by all the love shown by fans of the show?

We’re beyond amazed….especially since we were just being ourselves. I (John John) always acts like that….always imitating my idol, the late Bernie Mac, and tons of other voices. (It was crazy how many people reached out to me when Bernie Mac died. lol some people thought I was his cousin because I sounded just like him….I’m really
going to miss his comedy (Crystal), we have gotten so much love from across the nation, and now around the world. From what we know, the showed just aired in Kenya, South Africa, currently airing in the Philippines, and hopefully airing in other countries. People telling us that we’re the next Cosbys, the next Jefferson’s etc. For people to just mention those two shows right there….classics…is amazing. We just want to tell everyone out there, thank you! Thank you so much for all the wonderful things that have been said about us.

Do you all keep up with any of the other contestants from the show?

We keep in touch mostly with the Krashins and the Holmes. The Holmes’ also have a newborn. A baby girl…she’s so cute. They went to Aruba and had a great time. We wish we could have gone, but it was just hard cause they went during the school year. We miss them. The Krashins are hilarious, and Holmes were always so cool, and genuine. John John’s been working out like Rocky wanting to redeem himself for losing the push-up contest against Lance.

What plans are there for you and Crystal in the future? Any other TV shows or appearances in the making?

It’s always been my dream to be on TV…this is what I’ve always wanted to do with my life. We’ve been busy with raising Landon, but hopefully there are going to be other opportunities for TV appearances. I can’t wait to show everyone what I, and others have been believing my whole life…that this is what I was born to do…yall haven’t seen
anything yet. =)

Thank you Theo for getting the interview. John John, you are so cute. When Crystal mentioned in the interview that you’re trying to redeem yourself for losing the push up contest, I smiled. I remember that scene. Yeah, he really beat you. LOL. Anyway, CONGRATS again. I am so happy for you and Crystal and your precious baby. Jonn John, you need to get out and start doing stand up comedy. People would love you. In 5 years you would be FAMOUS! I mean, you are now, but even more so. Think of how many viewers of the Newlyweds show would come to see you if they knew you were in town. I know I would. Especially if you ended the show with a push up contest. WINK. Peace and Love to you and yours!
