I’m In: Blogging While Brown Conference
Filed under: Black Blogger Postings, Community, General, Society & Culture, Technology, Think Global
I’m in, are you? I just signed up for the Blogging While Brown Conference in Atlanta, GA July 25-27, 2008. According to the website, the most important purpose of the conference is to share knowledge. The conference will promote intellectual, social, and cultural development of the blogging community by bringing bloggers of color together. Blogging While Brown is an opportunity to meet other bloggers and blog readers of color for the first time, discuss current issues of interest to bloggers of color, network with individuals and organizations interested in leveraging online activity with offline results, and learn about the latest technology that will assist bloggers with publishing their work and improving their readers experience by fully engaging in the newest media technology.
I’m excited because I’ll finally get the chance to meet some of the bloggers I read on a regular basis. In a way, you sort of connect with the author after reading their blog for a while, so it’ll be nice to meet them face-to-face. I also hope to learn more about blogging and ways we can all work together to benefit our communities. Since I’m not sure all who’s attending, I thought I’d call out just a few of the bloggers I want to see. If you’re registered, let me know. If not then register here. Hope to see you there.

Hey Theo!
I’d like to get your comments on an article I’ve posted regarding the old storybook “Little Black Sambo.”
Thanks!
Dave Lucas
I registered for the event last week. I’m mad at myself for not taking advantage of the early-bird registration when it was available at $100. I ended up paying $150. I think that I’m going to submit a workshop paper for consideration as well.
peace, Villager
Villager, good to hear that. I jumped on the early-bird registration while I had the chance. Let me know what they say about your workshop idea.
Dave, thanks for the invite to read your post. I visited a site you’d linked to with the story minus illustrations and didn’t find anything wrong with it. It’s a story about a kid who is placed in a situation where his life is on the line and in his own way, takes advantage of an opportunity to overcome it.
But add the illustrations and my perception changes. I’ve had the opportunity of knowing a lot of people from India and none of them have looked like Sambo. The first thing that comes to mind when I see the images in the book is blackface. They are offensive and not a book that I would have on my kid’s shelf to read. If I were to see the book in stores and not know the history behind it, I would be highly offended.
I’ll try to make the conference even if it’s just one day. I’ll have a better idea of my calendar around the beginning of 2008.
How about you doing something on podcasting? Even if you’re not on the agenda, I’m bringing my iPod for a training session.
Vanessa, hopefully things will work out.
I might have to consider doing a workshop. I just don’t want to miss out on some of the other sessions. I was planning on bring a recorder so I could do some mini interviews for my show. Training is always available though.
Theo, my brotha’! The semester just ended and I’m studying for a final. Haven’t registered yet – gotta get more dough after the next semester starts – then I’ll be able to jump on the roster. I want to be in your formal or informal podcasting class too (way to elbow him Vanessa…LOL)
Hi Theo, I would have been interesting hanging out with you, unfortunately I can’t make it. I’m hooked up with many appointments. Well let me know how it went and who you met. Sooner…
It’s on the calendar, I’ve gotten approval from the wife. Just gotta get my registration paid. We gotta get you in the AfroSpear.
Cool. Let me know when you book your flight. I got approval from the wife also. It’s a pretty important part of the process.
Hi Theo,
I know I’m mad late with my comment-
I want to participate in this conference, but there are so many fundraisers and charity events that I attend during the summer – so I’ll have to wait as the date approaches to see if I can attend. If I go I’ll def let you know!
Tell me what you're thinking...
and oh, if you want a pic to show with your comment, go get a gravatar!
