Sagging Pants: Fashion or Disrespectful
It was bound to happen at some point. The Dallas city council is looking to declare war on the sagging pants fad. There are differing opinions about what needs to be done because you can’t jail someone for wearing pants below their waist. Some have proposed fines for indecent exposure and others feel warnings will work. But the bottom line is something will be done.
Most of the push for the ordinance is coming from black officials in the community and while the understand it is a fashion statement, they also feel it’s a sign of disrespect to others around them. They’ve also made the point that it’s not about race and hope that it will reduce discipline problems and increase responsibility. It’s gotten to the point where they’re even going to put up billboards (mostly around the black neighborhoods) urging young men to “Pull’em Up”.
So what do you think? Is this impeding on their personal freedoms? One thing I’ve learned in life is that your first impression is extremely important. While it may not be fair, when you meet someone you are immediately judged on your appearance. People treat you a certain way based on your attire. Try going to a business meeting in shorts and flip-flops. People will look at you like you’re crazy. Personally it’s hard for me to take you seriously when you have to keep pulling your pants up to keep them on. It’s a distraction and doesn’t make sense to me! While I think a fine is going too far, kids have to realize that opportunities can be missed just because you want to make a fashion statement.
Additional Thoughts: In listening to the radio this morning I heard some more comments on this topic. One listener said it’s going to take the young women to discourage this fad. If the ladies start calling them out, then change will happen. There’s a song out discouraging sagging and said when you spell “saggin” backwards what do you get? It’s all about perception. If you dress like a dope boy or thug then you might be treated like one.
Update: Read this post and comment if you were there. Saggin’ Summit Saturday at Dallas City Hall

I see alot of resentment coming from this. I’m not sure how I feel about it yet but I do see resentment.
I can see a lot of resentment coming out of making it a law also. Forcing them to pull up their pants might cause them to rebel more. I think it should be more of a community effort. I need to do better at this myself when I see it.
They need to pass a law against police brutality. This is an assualt on Black men, period.
I do not condone the sagging pants fad, especially in my household, but I am moreso and completely against passing what amounts to another anti-black law that criminalizes such and allows the police to increase their aggressive approach to policing our community.
I can understand some of the concerns expressed, by the local leaders pushing for this ordinance(whether their concerns are geniune or not)but I must say that this ordinance will set bad precedent and it tramples over the most sacred principles of the Texas and United States Constitutions because it’ll give police a pretextual basis to stop, question, search and harass our youth even moreso than they already do.
There has to be other less invasive solutions sought, because we already have more than enough bad laws on the books and too many of our young black and brown children tied to the criminal courts system in one form or another (i.e. truancy court, alternative schools, house arrest, probation, TYC and TYC parole). Why add an ordinace that simply tosses fuel on the youth crisis inside our community by targeting our children because of their personal preference to “sag”.
I strongly believe that home training is where the sagging fad begins and ends, and parents first and foremost, have a duty to talk with their child (ren) and express their concerns/disapproval about the sagging fad, but never to the point a child is deprived of their rights to freedom of choice and expression,

P.S. There are a lot of distasteful styles of dress that people embrace, but you do not see nor can we allow politicans to run around passing laws against it.
Lakeith,
Very well said. Thanks for your comment.
To pull something like this off, they need to keep it fair. They should also go after people with g-strings showing and those wearing tight Wranglers.
This is retarted. i sag my pants and its not to disrespect you old ass people, its a fashion and thats what we do in this day. Back in the fifties and sixties these old people were wearing fashions their parents thought were disrespectfull. Did anybody try to pass a law about it back then? I didnt think so. But todays older generation is power hungry and wants everything their way. Man forget that, if you pass the law were i live, i will walk all over government property protesting sagging them lower than ever.
Ray,
I can respect the whole fashion argument, but my thing is don’t get upset if the older generation doesn’t take you serious. It’s a generation gap thing and each has gone through the same type of situation during their youth. I do agree with you on the law being passed. It’s not right and I hope nothing comes of it.
Thanks for the comment.
to me saggin is nasty n boys shouldn’t do it dats not cool
When you take a look at the government, the target objective seems to always be control. If they make it so that we live in fear and make it seem as though we can’t do anything about the power that they have… Then slowly, the United States of America will fall; as all great empires have. Look at history. Every great empire’s destruction starts on the inside. The people. When we sacrifice our freedoms because we’ve been convinced that people with sagging pants will shoot us, or that if there’s no cameras at stop lights; then someone will run a stop light and hit you… That’s when we lose what this country stands for in the first place. Leave people be. Culture develops over the years and passes by quickly. When does culture pass by slowly? When there’s governmental opposition. When that control that we as a country desire to keep cut away from us is threatening us.
Heed this warning. Don’t let them take control. When they do, it’s all over. Don’t live in fear. Life is beyond religion. Censorship and pointless laws like this… The cameras at your stoplights. I promise you, that it all ties together. If you don’t fight it now, like the Americans before you have done, then you’ll lose over 200 years of work. Don’t let them get away with things like this. Fight it before it becomes a dictatorship. If you don’t cut the snakes tail off, then it will strangle you. Protest away like Americans are supposed to you. Don’t let them convince you that you don’t have the time to do it because of loss of job security. If you don’t; then the remaining trickle of respect that the world has for this country will evaporate in the heat that is our screw ups.
saggin is fine theres nothin wrong wit it
NASTY ASS PEOPLE THAT ARE LIKE THAT PULLING THEIR PANTS BELOW THEIR WAIST THAT’S LIKE SO NASTY ASS ALSO WHEN YOU SHOW YOUR UNDERWEAR EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a teen and i have to say that I am all for getting a law like this passed.
I recall Atlanta discussing the possibility of such a law and I would have to agree with LaKeith.
Personally, jeans that are a little baggy are fine for my aesthetic taste but I don’t want to see anyone’s ass. But I don’t want the owness to be on females to regulate the behavior of men. I want to be accountable for my own behavior and that’s it.
Perhaps they should pass a law against plumbers – my father worked in real estate and I saw plenty of plumber’s crack growing up – gross!
i think this is the dumbest law to ever be discussed. i dnt feel its disrespectful at all. there are older people that wear some stupid clothing as well and there is no law trying to be passed about 0 yr old women who wear mini skirts and tiny ass shirts. you dnt see a guys ass when they sag their pants. its so dumb and it pisses me off. You should dress how you want, if its comfortable. ITS AMERICA!! stop prostitution instead of guys sagging their pants
i dont think that the government should be trying to pass the law because they are not the ones who r wearing the clothes we are. if people dont like it then they need to turn their heads because we are not wearing it for them we r wearing it because it make us feel better. if they pass the law then there will be way more crime because they r taking something that we had invited
this whole thing is really getting out of hand. What people are simply saying is that when people look at you its natural to size you up. some guys feel that its a part of who they are. what people see is someone who dosen’t has enough respect for himself, why should anyone take him seriously. You don’t fit in. Yea mabe to the other saggin folks. stay in your click. continue to complain that you can’t get a job, sag in a suit then look in a mirror. what is it about your ass that deserves to be shared with the world. do you think people enjoy seeing your ass, sounds kinda gay to me. maybe that’s it. a new gay thing like the rainbow colors or something. what’s worst is not only they sag the back, but sometimes the front. As men well understand, the fronts of boxers can somtime expose your goodies, at home, ain’t no big deal, but standing at the bus stop, that’s some funny shit! But for real brothers, saggin makes you look unkept, dirty, no home training, etc…what’s even funnier is to see guys pants so big they have to use one hand to hold their pants up when they walk. what happens when you have to use both hands. I’ve seen what happens, and that is some funny shit. Know wonder the jails are filled with my brothers, they can’t run from the cops any more. How you gonna run if ya damn pants keep fallin down. cops don’t even have to run to fast the catch ya. Have you ever see a brother run saggin, again, that’s some funny shit. especially when you watch the tv show, cops. Sorry guys, it’s just lame, it’s a style that has long been overdue for a new look. Don’t even get me started on the brothers saggin with dirty draws, again, that’s some funny shit. Better yet keep saggin, ya’ll ain’t gonna get good jobs anyway. maybe when you become men you’ll put away your childish fashions. another funny thing is to see a 30something brother saggin that’s some funny shit. Grow the F*** UP!Frankly as I see it the lower you sag is simply a sign of low intelligence.Sorry brothers just callin it as I see it. And believe me, there are plenty of brothers laughing at ya’ll hanging out yo asses. as I said, that’s some funny shit, and it looks pretty damn gay. no offense to gay people. It’s like you all are telling people “kiss my ass, PLEASE”.It don’t bother me to see it. I understand the mentality. keep up the comedy show for me guys. Next thing comming will be BOOTY cracks with the sag, Don’t trip it may be comming soon. i’ve seen one already, may be a new trend. booty crack with an arrow tattoo pointing at your crack. again that some funny shit. Peace out my black people.
iight, its cool for white folks to wear pants that are so tight you can count thier leg hairs but its illegal to sag??!!?? iight dallasG………listen to what you said…..you said people will judge you on your appearance….thats the problem….people ASSUME…….when the gov. passes a law against discrimination of race and appearence we can talk…..until then imma sag….moreso now than ever…..when the Gov. stops worrying about starving ppl in Africa and start worrying about the poor and starving on OUR land the ghettos will be destroyed and the percent of poverty strikin families will deminish…….therfore crime, drugs and everything that goes along with the “HOOD” will also fall. Everything thats wrong with america was and will 4ever be created by our own government.
If you don’t want to see people’s underwear… Don’t look! People who sag aren’t asking people to look the only way you could tell is if you look at their ass.
Wow. Who would have thought this topic would blow up like this. I’m glad to see people are passionate about their dress attire. Now lets focus this same passion in getting out to vote and making our communities better then we’ll be on to something.
Note: Just because someone doesn’t hold your same opinion doesn’t mean they’re bitches. Everyone who comments here is welcome to express how they feel about a post. Let’s keep it respectable.
Honestly…you can’t help BUT notice big “smiley face” boxers staring at you from between a South Pole jacket and knock off Sean John jeans. All opinions are valid BUT if you’re going to make your point then make it logically with discussion points.
“Don’t look” is not a discussion point. If you feel your “side of the argument isn’t represented calling people bitches probably isn’t going to engender a lot of goodwill for your cause.
I actually think people who sag DO want people to look. That’s them expressing their style. Why would you express your style if you didn’t want people to pay attention? With that said, pull your damn pants up! Nobody is saying pull them up to your belly button, but wearing them so low you can’t walk without one hand on your belt buckle is ridiculous.
When is a law going to be passed banning all of the tight and body revealing clothes the white emo kids are wearing these days. I find that more offensive than seeing someone’s boxers or over sized pants. I don’t want to see the outline of your “package” in your super tight skinny jeans. And they say sagging is a homosexual thing… please!
i been saggin since the 5th grade…i aint bangin or nothin i just like my pants under my butt i dont like nothin squeezin on my butt thats why i dont like wearin them up on my waist i wear cartoon back packs so that they dont sit on my butt i just dont like stuff touchin my butt at all but i wear big shirts and hoop shorts so it aint like nobody seein my drawls i dont think its homosexual to not wanna have nothin huggin yo butt and if the police wanna come and pay for my clothes than ill wear them how they want me too but since my mama buy my clothes and she let me sag ima keep wearin them how i want to
DaDa, thanks for your comment.
“…if the police wanna come and pay for my clothes than ill wear them how they want me too but since my mama buy my clothes and she let me sag ima keep wearin them how i want to”
I can’t hate on you for that. But at the same time, when you’re in the workplace (or school) there is a dress code that needs to be adhered to. My issue is with those who complain about people judging them based on their clothing. While it may be wrong, it’s a reality. I’m glad to hear you don’t bang and just see it as a fashion statement.
DADA U ARE SO RIGHT
Wearing your pants on your waste is squeezing your butt? Wow.
Superficially, there’s nothing wrong with how you wear your pants. As the owner of those clothes through purchase or gift, you are legally justified to wear your pants as you see fit short of public indecency. One key reason why many find issue with excessively sagging your pants to the point where they hang below your butt is that we as (Christians, Black folks, human beings) owe it to one another to bring awareness to those we interact with. For example, as a child you may like sagging but when you go to college and find yourself applying for an internship with a Fortune 500 corporation or attending a scholarship banquet for a full ride it would be in your best interest to pull up your pants and throw on a belt. You may say, “I already know to do that” or “They should accept me as I am”. As true as those statements may be they don’t exist in a real world. You can argue the injustices of prejudging people all day, but the fact is we ALL judge others based on appearances. Why put yourself at a deficit with those who can affect how, where, and when you make income some day just because you haven’t ever met a belt that you like. It’s better to learn when to fight your battles than spend your life justifying how you wear your pants.
Well said Darrell. As an educator, I try to get that across to my students but it often falls on deaf ears particularly if the parents at home don’t make an effort to reinforce it.
If saggin’ is your thing, then so be it. The bigger issue is that many that choose to sag don’t have any intention of going to the next level like many of us have. They intend to make their own path so they don’t have to bother with assimilation. And who knows what that path may be. That’s a much bigger issue and I think saggin’, for some, is just a manifestation of rebellion and throwing the finger at what society says is a more conventional way or path of success in life. Or who knows? Maybe I’m making it a bigger issue than it is. Maybe saggers really don’t like anything squeezing their butts. Just don’t complain when people judge you, like Theo said.
I sag but you cant see my underwear i dont wear the little tight shirts or shirts that dont pass my waist and somebody will still ask me why dont i pull my pants up i just laugh beacuse they just wanna bother me thats how i feel it really doesnt concern them now if you see my drawls than thats a different story i wouldnt want my daughter seein no other boys drawls either but im 17 so i think im old emough to be able to choose how to wear my clothes and i feel more comfortable wearing them the way i do..im not trying to argue with anybody but just replyin to joel i wear my pants under my butt and when i pull them up on my waist they feel like there huggin my butt so i guess you can wow about that if you want but thats how it feels to me and again i dont like nothing huggin my butt
Like I said, wow.
I just find it hard to understand how wearing something that’s designed to cover your butt without hugging it (in most cases) feels uncomfortable. I don’t expect someone to wear their pants old man style up to the navel, but I don’t see how wearing them over your butt is uncomfortable, especially if you wear pants with room in them. Oh well, do your thing. Thank goodness for drawls.
I don’t sag out in public because I find that very disturbing to watch. People find me gay because I don’t sag my pants. My mother would get so mad at me if I were to start sagging my pants. One day my pants were a little high I admit and I was planning on sagging a little that nobody will see anyting but I changed my mind because I didn’t feel like myself sagging just a little. I like girls butts and all but I don’t want to see boys butts though so please just pull up your pants you perverts.
this is stupid i dont see the point of sagging baggy pants but skinny jeans its fine. and when people can wear long sleeve shirts and roll them up or put sunglasses on top of there heads but we cant sag it makes no sense also dont look most shirts cover it up? and i choose not to pull my pants up to the point where you can see my junk bulging out like some most of the adults at my school and if i bought the clothes and my parents see me leaving the house with them worn like this its fine because its not physically hurting any body and the under wear? well girls can wear tank tops under v-necks thats the same thing and i wear basketball pants under my jeans so u would never see my under wear this law is bull shit its freedom of speech these shit head politician wants every body to reform and be perfect it will never happpen
-Some one with 4 months of detention
Sagging is damn sexy and I love seeing the guys asses all the time.
Wow, I am doing a paper on trends and came across this post. This is very interesting. While I agree that each generation has its on way of expression, I am generation X btw, I also agree to social norms that must generate our guidelines to social conduct and demeanor. Look, we live in the world where not everyone will always agree with what you do, we base our behaviors with OUR beliefs and morals. If you think its ok to walk around and basically moon people, I really don’t care, thats ok with you. I think it is absolutely hilarious when I see someone walking down the hallway of my University holding books in one and hand and their pants in another, OMG. If you want to be inconvenienced and fumble around with that, its up to you.
Heres my argument, please for the love of GOD quit making this an attack on Black people, OMG. I am so freaking over hearing this worn-out argument, its old. Stop. Come up with some other valid points. If a culturally diverse population comes up with a trend, as this trend did come from black people, then people automatically blame it on their race and say they are being targeted. NO you are being targeted because out of all the freaking trends, this just happens to be very offensive by SOCIETIES standards. That encompasses everyone not just whites. Quit already. This trend started as a result of not being able to wear belts in prison and bands like Kris Kross who wore their pants big baggie and backwards. And, referring to Erik Erikson’s model of development we know that adolescent’s is a time that individualism and identity are important. Young people are influenced usually by things that go against the norms.
So, like I said, if you wanna wear your pants down at you knees or for that matter no pants at all, I don’t care, it doesn’t bother me. But if you wanna play the victim role because YOU KNOW IT GOES AGAINST NORMS and blame an attack on you because your black, that’s not ok, STOP!!
Tell me what you're thinking...
and oh, if you want a pic to show with your comment, go get a gravatar!
