What the President Has Signed Into Law - August 2007
I had plans to do this at the end of every month, but August got away from me. But I promised to stay on it, so I will. The purpose for this post is to inform you of the new laws enacted by President Bush. It’s good to know what’s going on because some of them may benefit us as a people. It’s important for us to watch every step our government takes. We elect them, so we need to make sure they are doing their job. The laws I list are posted at whitehouse.gov. For a more unbiased version, I’d recommend doing additional research at govtrack.us.
On Monday, August 13, 2007, the President signed into law:
H.R. 2863, which authorizes the Coquille Indian Tribe of Oregon to convey land and interests in land owned by the Tribe.
H.R. 2952, which authorizes the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe of Michigan to convey land and interests in land owned by the Tribe.
H.R. 3006, which modifies the State of Idaho’s authority to use the proceeds from its agricultural college land grants.
S. 375, which directs the Department of the Interior to issue a new quitclaim deed to two Native American tribes in Oregon.
S. 975, which provides congressional approval of a fire protection compact among specified Great Plains States.
S. 1716, which removes a statutory requirement that forage producers carry crop insurance in order to be eligible for crop disaster and livestock assistance for certain crop years.
On Thursday, August 9, 2007 the President signed into law:
H.R. 2272, the “America COMPETES Act” or the “America Creating Opportunities to Meaningfully Promote Excellence in Technology, Education, and Science Act,” which authorizes various programs at the National Science Foundation and the Departments of Energy, Commerce, and Education intended to strengthen education and research in the United States related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
On Thursday, August 9, 2007, the President signed into law:
H.R. 1260, which designates a facility of the United States Postal Service as the Claude Ramsey Post Office;
H.R. 1335, which designates a facility of the United States Postal Service as the S/Sgt Lewis G. Watkins Post Office Building;
H.R. 1384, which designates a facility of the United States Postal Service as the Buck Owens Post Office;
H.R. 1425, which designates a facility of the United States Postal Service as the Staff Sergeant Marvin “Rex” Young Post Office Building;
H.R. 1434, which designates a facility of the United States Postal Service as the Rachel Carson Post Office Building;
H.R. 1617, which designates a facility of the United States Postal Service as the Harriett F. Woods Post Office Building;

S. 1099, which extends Federal Employee Health Benefits to United States citizen employees of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park Commission.
On Wednesday, August 8, 2007, the President signed into law:
H.R. 3206, which extends the authorizations of certain Small Business Administration programs until December 15, 2007.
On Monday, August 6, 2007, the President signed into law:
H.R. 3311, which authorizes additional funds for emergency repairs and reconstruction of the Interstate I-35 bridge located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, that collapsed on August 1, 2007, and waives the limitation on emergency relief funds for those emergency repairs and reconstruction.
On August 3, 2007, the President signed into law:
President Bush Signs “Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11″
This legislation builds upon the considerable progress we have made in strengthening our defenses and protecting Americans since the attacks of September 11, 2001.
On Friday, August 3, 2007, the President signed into law:
H.R. 2429, which provides an exception to the 60-day limit on Medicare reciprocal billing arrangements between two physicians during the period in which one of the physicians is ordered to active duty as a member of a reserve component of the Armed Forces.
