Free Genarlow Wilson

While I don’t condone what he did, you have to admit the punishment of Genarlow Wilson, does not fit the crime. For those who haven’t heard Wilson has spent more than two years, of a ten year sentence, in prison for receiving consensual oral sex from a 15-year-old girl when he was 17. Convicted under the Child Protection Act, consensual sex acts with a child 16 and under would result in prison time. Once again policy is being misused and is ruining the life of this young man.

I heard about his story on the news and have read about it from the point of view from a couple of bloggers and have come to this conclusion. Something needs to be done. But the issue is, where do we start? Kids are becoming sexually active at younger ages and what they see in the media on television, commercials and hear in music plays a big factor. Are sex education classes enough? Would teaching them the law and what not to do work? Wilson obviously didn’t know he could get in trouble, especially if she was down for it also.

I watch how young kids interact and it’s different from when I was growing up. They’re a lot more outspoken and the girls have become a lot more aggressive when it comes to the opposite sex. It’s all about getting everything you want, right now, with as little work as possible. There are some kids out there who dare to be different, but the numbers are few and they tend not to get as much recognition as they deserve.

The world today is a crazy place, but I have faith that it will get better. And I hope Genarlow Wilson believes that also. Let’s do for him what we did for Shaquanda.
