schoolhouse.jpgIf you are in high school (or the parent of a high schooler), it’s time to start thinking about where you want to go to college. The people over at blackenterprise.com has put together a list of the Top 10 colleges for African-Americans. The list is based on a couple of different criteria and the goal was to be as inclusive as possible while targeting schools that would be of interest to black students. And the top 10 schools are:

10Wesleyan University
9University of Pennsylvania
8Columbia University
7Stanford University
6Hampton University
5Spelman College
4Harvard University
3North Carolina A&T State Univ.
2Howard University

1Florida A&M University

If you log on to the website you will be able to see a list of the top 50 colleges for African-Americans. I was glad to see my dad’s alma mater Hampton University on the list. I’ve been once and from what I can remember it was a really nice campus. Education is important to me. I try not to take it for granted because a lot of people fought and died so I could have the right to a quality education.

My Body World Experience

Body WorldThis weekend, my wife and I got the chance to visit the Body Worlds exhibit at the Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas. For those who’ve never heard of it, Gunther von Hagens uses donated bodies to educate the public about health and anatomy. The bodies are taken and put through a process called plastination, where the decomposition of the parts is actually halted. This allows them to be preserved and placed in specific poses for all to see. They don’t give the identity of the donors or show the faces because the goal is to educate. And educate it did.

The Return of the Magnificent by DJ Jazzy Jeff

Here’s another CD review from Darrell. This is one of his most recent posts on theojohnson.net, so I thought I’d share here. Hope you enjoy.

———————————

Jazzy Jeff AlbumnAs a hip-hop fan, you have to sometime wish that there was some type of Rapper 401(k) or pension plan. There are some of our greatest pioneers out there who did it for the love before there was even money in it. Some even fell by the wayside b/c of convictions, drugs, poor money management, or even just being a one-hit wonder. Thankfully, Jeffrey Townes didn’t fall into that category…even if you didn’t know it. Despite being the lesser known half of the 90′s supergroup “DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince”, Jazzy Jeff has been doing quite well for himself. While Willie has been off becoming a movie icon, Jazz has been the musical force behind icons like Jill Scott and Musiq. He’s also produced for Little Brother, De La Soul, and he even dropped some birds for his boy Will. “The Return of the Magnificent” is Jazzy’s fif album, yo.

Hiremymom.com logoI was listening to an interview on the BizRadio and heard about hiremymom.com which just launched last week. According to the website their goal is to “To provide businesses with top talent for temporary and permanent projects while enabling mom professionals to capitalize on the freedom and flexibility to do top-rated work from home.”. I think this is great and I feel this is the new way of doing business. With the rapid advances in technology and internet bandwidth, it’s easier to do all of your work from a remote location. This is becoming popular and I think they are on the right track.

Hiremymom.com is offering a six month free trial membership if you sign up now. After the trial, a very small fee of $9.95 a month will allow you to keep receiving potential offers. If you are a business you can submit job proposals for free. I signed up my mom and found the process to be very simple. We immediately began receiving emails of potential jobs from businesses needing a wide variety of services. I hope my mom will be able to find a project that will help her grow her business. *Insert Shameless Plug* If you need quality clerical services at affordable prices, let AT&M Administrative Services take care of you. *End Shameless Plug*. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Limbaugh Continues to Plant Seeds of Ignorance

Old School RushNow I’m sure you’re asking, what’s new about Rush Limbaugh spreading ignorance? On his show last week, “Limburger” played a “parody” video clip about Barack Obama called “The Magic Negro”. This clip and another called “U Da Real Negro, Screw Obama”, were both posted on YouTube for all to see. “The Magic Negro” was based off of an article published in the Los Angeles Times by writer David Ehrenstein, who stated the “The Magic Negro” was a black person who is perceived to be more socially accepted among whites. But Limburger took the article further and intentionally put this video out there to offend black people.

Everyone expects Rush to do things like this. His job is to throw people off the real issues by any means necessary. Divide and conquer is his method and at times it actually works. I don’t listen to his show, but the portions I have heard is no more than political comic relief. This is how he gets his ratings. He doesn’t get it on delivering the news. It’s all about controversy, so I’m sure he’ll live to work another day.

While this may sound crazy, I think Limburger’s outward show of racism is doing us a favor. Read more

National Foster Care Awareness Month – May

Blue Ribbon LogoMay is National Foster Care Month – a time to make a lasting difference in a child’s life. There are 513,000 American youth in foster care. No matter how much time you have to give, you can do something positive that will “Change a Lifetime” for a young person in foster care. For more information on how you can help, please visit www.fostercaremonth.org today.

My grandmother was a foster caretaker for a couple of years and was able to care for some amazing kids. Most of the kids were from homes where the parents were on drugs or weren’t able to care for them. Each kid had a story and my grandmother took them in as babies to care and give them the love they derserved. We helped and babysat when we couldYoung Boy in Grass and we hated to see them leave when they were adopted. It did do one thing for me. It showed me how blessed I was to have parents who cared for me and made sure I had the things I needed to be a success in life.

There are a lot of successful people who have come out of foster care and I wanted to highlight some of the advocates and their organizations below. If you have the oppotunity to be a foster parent, consider it. It’s one way to have an impact on a child’s life.
