I hate to see hip-hop get a bad name because of the media, so I thought I’d repost this music review from Darrell. This CD is part of my collection and it’s one I’d recommend to anyone interested in music with a message. If you want to keep it real, this CD is about as real as it gets. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Lecrae Lecrae is a Christian rapper based in Memphis, Tennessee. Signed to Reach Records, Lecrae has dedicated himself to flowing Christian-based lyrics and witnessing Christ to the world with his words. Lecrae notes that he gave his life to Christ at the age of 19 after living a life of “excessive sin”. He says that his aim is “to digest theology and spit it back out so the streets can digest it.”

“After the Music Stops” is Lecrae’s second LP release. Why is it whenever we hear or think anything related to Christian rap we go screaming the other way rushing to destroy our headphones? As a Christian it ain’t hard to understand; Satan would prefer we just continue to listen to any medium void of Christ’s presence and mire in our sinfulness. Well, not on my watch! Thanks to “After the Music” we’ve go a Christian addition to TN’s reviews.

OK, stop and take a breath. Now clear your mind. No, really throw out every preconceived notion you have of Christian rap. If you don’t, Lecrae will clear it for you. Dude has all ‘the tools’. Good voice, aggressive cadence, solid wordplay, and thought-provoking lyrics which are obviously the name of the game for a Christian hip-hopper. Lecrae uses a variety of different styles to deliver his message to those both inside and outside the Body. He drops some soul on “It’s Your World”, a sprinkling of reggae on “Run”, a speed flow on “The Truth”…boy definitely has flow.

What I really found interesting was how he called out a buncha folks self-proclaimed kings on “The King”. I guess a certain ATL rapper wasn’t interested in beefing with a Christian rapper…no street cred in that. ***STAR TRACKS*** The previously mentioned “Send Me” would be on the list as well as “Unashamed”, but not for how hot the beat is or the hook. “Unashamed” makes the list for me because of what the lyrics say: All they rhyme about is guns, money, sex, and drugs 80% of these dudes is really fictional thugs We don’t kill nobody, We don’t rob no stores, We don’t trap, We ain’t strapped, We don’t smoke that dro We ain’t pimpin’ We ain’t trippin If we tippin’ on some vogues then you’ll probably hear that Jesus music comin’ out our doors That’s a pretty powerful statement and as bold and defiant as rap’s true roots.

Overall, this CD is MUCH better than I thought it would be and thanks to TJ for suggesting I review it. The production is good but Lecrae puts the entire album over the top. His Ludacris-like aggression with his Nas-like provocation in a Christian youth-ready package makes a savory treat for your soul’s palate. I give this album an A- rating. This is a really good joint…no pun intended.

  8. This guy is a real artist. One of the reason why Craig Lewis is wrong when it comes to rap as a whole. Guys like him and the Ambassador are the only two that amazed me this much. What do you see when you close your eyes and After the Music Stops are two hits that will feel your soul and it is after all rap music.

  10. I’m glad you did a review on Lecrae. I personally think he’s just too raw and I look up to him in my walk with God. I’ve been worshipping God through his music for about a year, and his newest CD Rebel is sooooo good. I think you should check it out and possibly do a review on it.
