38th NAACP Image Awards
This past Friday, I had the chance to check out the 38th NAACP Image Awards and thought it went pretty well. LL Cool J started out the night on a good note stating how this is the time to show the world we (black people) have class. While I’d like to think that is what people tend to think when they see me, I guess that’s not always the case. Jennifer Hudson started out the night with the first award for Outstanding supporting Actress in a movie. This sista is on top and it’s good to see her enjoying the success for her role in Dreamgirls.
Soledad O’Brien received the Presidents Award for her work in journalism and Bill Cosby was honored as a 2007 NAACP Image Award Hall of Fame Inductee. Before receiving the honor, they highlighted the life and accomplishments of Dr. Cosby and it’s hard for me to see how people can criticize him for what he’s said in the past. He was a black pioneer in television and movies, which caused many doors to be opened to other black actors. And in my opinion, he genuinely wants to see people succeed.
Prince, the Outstanding Music Artist, received a standing ovation as he came up. He left the audience with some words of wisdom about protecting the environment and the music industry. Bono, also was honored with the NAACP Chairman’s Award for his accomplishments and philanthropy for the people of Africa. I honestly have to say Bono is the man. Chris Tucker, made a comment before he came up that Bono is not even black and he’s doing all this work in Africa, so we need to ban together and help out. When up there, Bono gave an inspiring speech about how he was raised and how we are the generation to end poverty in the world.
Overall, it was a good show. Although, I had no idea what Bill Cosby was talking about, the acceptance speeches were good. They did do Forrest Whittaker (Best Actor) wrong when they cut his speech short. But I guess they had a time schedule. I like seeing black people getting recognized for doing good things. We need more of that.
